Our trainees have had a busy few weeks prior to the Easter Break, with a range of opportunities to engage with the broader profession outside of the formal structure of the TLPC and understand more about the support provided to early career lawyers while exploring employment opportunities in other parts of Tasmania.
On Thursday 21 March, the Board of Directors of the Centre for Legal Studies hosted our annual Cocktail Party event at the beautiful and historic Hobart Town Hall Ballroom. Members of the Tasmanian and Commonwealth judiciary, magistracy and the broader profession, along with other important stakeholders are invited to this event, designed as an opportunity for TLPC trainees to be introduced to the profession in an informal social setting.
Over the past few years, with assistance and financial support from the Law Society of Tasmania, interested TLPC trainees have travelled to the North West Coast to gain an understanding of life as a lawyer and explore employment opportunities in regional Tasmania. This tour is hosted by the North West Early Careers Lawyer Committee and trainees visit participating firms, attend a Q&A panel session with local practitioners and attend social events with the broader profession to assist in building important relationships and networks outside of Hobart.
This year, an inaugural Launceston Tour was organised as a separate event, hosted by the Northern Early Career Lawyers Committee. Several trainees who had travelled to the North West also participated in this tour. In addition to visiting local firms and community legal centres, the trainees were given guided tours of the Supreme Court and Federal Circuit Court and Family Court of Australia(FCFCOA), hosted by the Chief Justice Alan Blow, Supreme Court of Tasmania, Magistrate Evan Hughes, and Judge Marcus Turnbull ( FCFCOA). The event was topped off with a Q&A panel session and dinner with members of the local profession in attendance.
