Peter Dixon Memorial Prize

In 2023, to honour former Magistrate Peter Dixon, the inaugural Peter Dixon Memorial Prize was created for the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course (TLPC).

Peter Dixon commenced practice in the North West of Tasmania in the 1970s as a criminal lawyer prior to his appointment as a Magistrate in 1986. Peter was a lifelong contributor to improving the conditions and standards for those who practised law and was actively involved in legal education and mentoring of young practitioners throughout his career. Peter had a long association with the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course and as a Magistrate was involved in the creation of the practical advocacy exercises in the Magistrates Court that all trainees undertake during the Course.

The Peter Dixon Memorial Prize is awarded to a trainee who display qualities that Peter embodied throughout his career including collegiality, willingness to support others, and a demonstrated commitment to developing and improving legal skills. The prize is generously supported by funds provided through the Tasmanian Magistrates Association.

The 2024 recipient of the Peter Dixon Memorial Prize was Miles Kahles. Miles graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts & Law and attended the TLPC between February and July 2024. After graduating from the TLPC Miles was admitted to practice on 9 August 2024 and is working in a private law firm in Hobart, Tasmania.
