An important part of the LACC National Competency Standards for entry level lawyers (here) involves developing core “Lawyer’s Skills”, including oral communication, interviewing, letter writing and drafting skills.
In Week 2 of the 2024 TLPC, the trainees participated in a two day intensive Skills Workshop at an offsite venue in the Hobart CBD. The Skills Workshop focused on Plain English writing, drafting affidavits and letters and core interviewing skills.
On Day 1, we were assisted by several guest presenters, including specialist trainers from Tasmania’s 26Ten program, a program designed to improve adult literacy. The trainers provided a tailored program aimed at following Plain English principles in legal writing. Later in the day, the focus was on Client Interviewing, with some practical scenario-based activities, and a Q &A panel discussion with senior and junior practitioners specialising in criminal law from the private profession and legal assistance sector in Hobart, giving guidance and tips on client interviewing.
The important skill of Affidavit writing was the focus of Day 2. Trainees had the opportunity to hear and learn from Chris Groves, Dobson Mitchell & Allport and Jennifer O’Farrell (our resident Supreme Court Practice & Advocacy Unit instructor), and participated in practical activities focused on the building blocks of affidavit writing.
